The mercury sphygmomanometers have been banned because of environmental concerns of disposing off mercury.

The point lost in translation…
I have had three different types of electronic BP monitor. This included an industrial model which used to sit on desk and patients wold insert their hand into it. All these monitors never showed consistent readings. I can not trust the electronic monitors at all.

To be honest I am a doctor and I know how these machines work. Our body is quite dynamic and a little variation is expected. Even we take into account an error of 10/5 on both systolic and diastolic BPs. Using a mercury sphygmomanometer is time consuming as compared to the electronic monitors. It also depends upon how you place the cord, at what the level the machine is kept. Hope this helps!
