The book is a narration of Rajaraja Chola, the king of the Chola Dynasty during the 10th and 11th centuries. This novel, consisting of five volumes, tells us stories about the king and the incidents that took place during his time.

Summary of the Book

The young and charming Vandiyadevan has set out on a mission to travel to the Chola Land and deliver a message to their King about an alleged plot against him. The story goes back and forth between Vandiyadevan’s travel to the Chola Land, and the travels and adventures of Arulmozhivarman (Rajaraja’s name before he was titled the Chola King) in Sri Lanka. Arulmozhi’s sister, Kundavai, is desperately trying to get her brother to come back to their land and bring about political peace. She believes he can rid it of unrest, signs of civil war and enemies. The novel acknowledges the bonding and friendship between Vandiyadevan and Arulmozhivarman during the travels, and their attempt to end the conspiracy and understand what caused it.

About Kalki Krishnamurthy

Kalki is a sobriquet of R.Krishnamurthy. He was a novelist, short story writer, Tamil freedom fighter, social crusader, satirist, film and music critic all in one. He was also an Indian independence activist and connoisseur of the arts writer. Among his notable works are 120 short stories, 10 short novels, 5 novels and 3 historical romances.

Kalki’s contribution to Tamil music is worthy of mention. He started a movement where he got Carnatic musicians to include more Tamil songs in their concerts, and even composed a few songs. His novel Alai Osai had won him a Sahitya Akademi Award posthumously.
